Through These Gates and Down the Path:
Linwood Park

Notecard

Linwood Gate c.1907

“And Down the Path” has been added to the title referring to the old, time-worn path across the grove from the gate to the park. It is symbolic of our continued journey of exploration through Linwood.

The original book was green to reflect the trees and grass. The new book is a complementary dark blue to reflect the lake and sky.

This is the book you’ve heard about. “Through These Gates: Linwood Park,” researched and written by Karen Boas, was published in 1984 for the Linwood Centennial Celebration. The 2,000 copies of the book printed sold rapidly and it has long been unavailable. In response to popular demand, and in celebration of Linwood’s 125th anniversary in 2009, the complete original book with 216 pages and 366 pictures -- plus additional features and chapters greatly expanding and updating book -- is being published by Karen and her son Gary, a professional writer, under the title “Through These Gates and Down the Path: Linwood Park.” Photographs are being rescanned for quality and the book will include an every name index. The updated sections will be in full color.

Based on four years of intensive research and personal memories and photographs from the private collections of hundreds of Linwood friends, the quality, hardbound book quickly became an heirloom. Preorders will be taken until January 15, 2009 for delivery in August 2009. We do not know whether extra copies will be available after publication. To avoid disappointment, please preorder.

The Bickels Henry and Sophia Bickel, great grandparents of the author, on the Linwood Beach, August 1912. Henry was a founder of the park, was on the original board of directors, and built a cottage the first year, where I grew up. Seven generations of our family have enjoyed Linwood, owning five cottages.

Please do not confuse this book with any similar sounding book or author.

We also recommend the book "Linwood Trees" being prepared by Janet Balliett Waggoner and her daughter Gretchen Waggoner Long, who are also from an old Linwood family. Their book focuses on individual cottages and families and on the most recent 25 years, so is quite different from our book. Many people will want to order both books. See www.janetwaggoner.com or contact linwoodtreesbook@yahoo.com or 614-523- 2777.
